Wharton Essay 1 Final Draft....again....for the 4th time

Since I have M~W off this week (it's Thanksgiving holiday in Korea), I have been refining my Wharton essay #1 once again. I think this is the fourth time I have mentioned in my blog that I am refining the essay's final draft. And I am now sick and tired of making false, pretentious, and premature claim that I am done with the Wharton essays in this blog.

I am now down to 1300 words for the #1 essay, and the thought of cutting out another 200 words for which I have put so many hours of work is driving me nuts. (as you can sense from this post, I am literally pulling my hair over this) The last two days were especially hectic, as I smoked about 3 packs of Marlboro "Red" cigarettes during the period. (yes, i must confess, I am a smoker, a chain-smoker for that matter, at this point.) I think Wharton and Stanford give me, by far, the most latitude as far as illustrating different aspects of my personal being through their essays, and the fact that I am struggling with the "applicans-friendly" Wharton essays bothers the shit out of me at this point. I mean, after all, how the hell am I gonna deal with 400~600 words limit HBS essays if I am having so much trouble with condensing the wharton essays?

I have had 4 different jobs in two distinct industries in two countries in the last five years at varying capacities, and I have to justify all the decisions I made related to this within 2500 words.

I was planning to submit at least two applications in the first round, but I dont think its possible now.

One of my good friends from UCLA days gradutated from Tuck this past summer, and now he's in Korea, starting his job for a VC company on October 4th.

He made very interesting comments on the prospect of job market for MBA graduates nowadays, and his exact words were "you know, banking jobs are everywhere! Most of my classmates who wanted to get into IB got in this year." I guess we are close enough, so I dont think he was promoting his school. If anything, I really think his comments were a good reflection of Tuck and its reputation by recruiters. So for those of you who consider Tuck, this is definetely a good news for you.

One funny thing is that, contrary to the popular belief, grades apparently do matter to recruiters on some occasions. The friend told me that the main reason he got the VC job was none other than his superb grades at Tuck. (he received the Dean's Honor, or something like that, given to students in top 5%, when he graduated.) Then again, this is Korea where academic excellence is highly regarded, perhaps higher than any other country.)

I am facing the same problems as you on the pruning of the essays. I remember reading someone say they had gone through 10 drafts of the Wharton essay's. I thought they were joking or seriously bad with words. I am currently on my 8th draft and surely have one more to go being 200 words over the limit.

I would strongly urge you to stick to 10% + or - of the max word count and not hit the +10% mark on every essay, from their posts on W S2S, it seem as if the AdComs were very pleased to read anything over that length, frowing upon it as a failure to understand what is important.

Swoop,

I dont think he intented to come to Korea for a job. But when he got an offer in VC, that apparently changed everything. The VC company is a subsidiary of a Korean company but very, very well known outside Korea. And he will be traveling to the US for much of his time. So I believe that the skills and contacts he would gain at his new job would be very much transferrable to just about any other VC/PE firms such as BlackStone. For your information, he had a very high expectation as far as salary was concerned, and apparently he got what he wanted after a series of negotiation.

To give you a perspective, the company said something like, "Pick a house, and we will cover the rent." :)

Aregon23,

so you dont think its wise to go over the limt and hit +10% on every essay?

My #2 essay is like 540 words, my #3 essay is about 530 words, and my 4th essay is about 520 words.

I guess I have a lot of work to do here.

Wow..

your friend seems to have snagged a cool job. I just wonder how the salaries pan out. I mean, after all, you still need to pay off the B-school debt. However, one thing I know from experience, is that life outisde U.S. is not that expensive!!

I could find that specific post for you if you want, that talks about not taking liberties with the +10% limit on all essays.

Like I said before I face the same problems, overshooting all my essays by 10%. I will try to prune them before I submit them. I want to bring it as close to the limit as possible.
